Trees in Barre City
Barre City Tree Nursery
Committee members and volunteers digging new trenches for more seedlings to be planted.
In 2020 the City received a grant from the Vermont Community and Urban Forestry program to establish a tree nursery. It was designed and built by Central Vermont Career Center teacher Amanda Garland (also Barre City Tree Stewardship Committee chair) and her Natural Resources and Sustainability students in spring 2021. The goal is for the city to have a place to raise trees to be planted later in the City, to have a place to tend trees received as donations or from grants, and to help educate the community about tree species.
The nursery is located on land owned by the city on Reservoir Rd just over the border in the town of Orange, across the street from the Barre City drinking water treatment plant. Barre City owns forested land around the drinking water reservoir and has a management plan for that property.
The students’ work was highlighted in a Times Argus article in May 2021.

Community involvement
The tree stewardship committee has hosted a winter tree ID walking tour in downtown, and a volunteer workday at the new tree nursery. Watch the committee home page, Front Porch Forum, and other local bulletin boards for upcoming events.
