Property and Evidence

The Barre City Police Department attempts to locate owners of found property. If you feel you may have lost an item within the city limits, you may call and provide a full description of your lost item to help determine if it may belong to you.

RETURN OF RECOVERED/FOUND PROPERTY

The return of property takes place Monday thru Friday 8AM-4PM by appointment. Property can only be returned by Sergeant Steve Durgin. Please call (802) 476-6613 to make an appointment.

SAFEKEEPING PROPERTY

Unless other written arrangements are made, unclaimed property for safekeeping will be disposed of within thirty (30) days per Barre City Police Department policy.

EVIDENCE

After a case has been adjudicated, related evidence will be held for a period of twelve months to allow for appeal, unless disposal is otherwise authorized by the State Attorney’s Office. Unless the officer has been advised in writing by the State's Attorney's Office that the case has been appealed, the items shall be disposed of within thirty (30) days after the initial twelve-month holding period.

ABANDONED OR FOUND PROPERTY

Property that is in the possession of the Police Department and has not been claimed within ninety (90) days may be disposed of pursuant to Title 27 VSA Chapter 11.

After attempts to notify the owner or related citizens have failed, the items will be converted to government use, sold, destroyed, or otherwise disposed of pursuant to applicable law and regulation.

Money, traveler’s checks, stocks, bonds, collectable currency, securities, or other such negotiable instruments will be sent to the Office of the State Treasurer.

PROPERTY SEIZED UNDER AN INVESTIGATION / SEARCH WARRANT

Once the warrant has been granted and the search completed, you will be contacted to pick up your personal property, excepting any items held for evidence. If the item seized is a motor vehicle, you will need to provide proof that you paid the tow bill prior to the vehicle being released.
